Red River Wooden Boats is (mostly) land-locked in the middle of North America, but we have clients all over the country. Contact us to discuss the boat you’ve been looking for.

Steve is a woodworker and boat enthusiast.
Red River Wooden Boats began on a 2-mile portage in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness when he decided carrying an 88 lb canoe wasn’t the best idea.

My son and daughter both started BWCA trips when they were 8, and since then it has been a rare year without a week or two in paddling and portaging. Unfortunately, both kids also prefer portaging to paddling—thus my desire for a much lighter canoe. Kevlars were just becoming available, but were way too pricey, so I decided to build a cedar stripper (my first boat ever). Needless to say, my shoulders loved the 54 lb weight, and I was hooked on boatbuilding.
Choosing a boat without trying it is tough.
If you can get to our shop in Hudson, Wisconsin, or our lake cabin near Itasca State Park in Minnesota, we can arrange for you to try out many of the boats shown. This will help you make personal choices for your boat on trim, seating, and other final touches.

We’d love to hear from you!
